An IBM SNA legacy system includes a mainframe and the software running on that mainframe. The software at the heart of this SNA system is VTAM. IBM mainframes are host-centric processing systems, meaning that the mainframe controls all software and resources. Terminals are attached to the mainframe. In the SNA hierarchy, the mainframe running VTAM is called the Physical Unit type 5, or PU5.
