The transport layer is layer 4 in the OSI protocol stack. It resides above the physical, data link, and network layers and just below the session layer. It provides a messaging service for the session layer and hides the underlying network from the upper layers. Transport services in general are discussed in the next section, "Transport Protocols and Services."
