NDIS is a Microsoft specification that was designed to make it easier for network interface card (NIC) vendors to develop and support products. Before NDIS, NIC vendors had to create drivers that were configured for each possible configuration into which the NIC might be installed. Novell developed a similar interface called ODI (Open Data-Link Interface).
