Motif is the industry-standard graphical user interface promoted by The Open Group. It is defined by the IEEE 1295 specification and is used on more than 200 hardware and software platforms. Motif provides application developers, end users, and system vendors with an environment for building applications with a standardized presentation on a wide range of platforms. Motif is the leading user interface for the UNIX-based operating system.

Motif provides application portability across a variety of platforms, allowing application developers to leverage their development work and customers to make valuable software investments. Motif is also the base graphical user interface toolkit for the CDE (Common Desktop Environment).
